The Story Behind StartTheDate

Why I Built StartTheDate

By Marc-André Gratton — founder of StartTheDate, author of Build The Man, Win The Game

I should be honest about who's behind this. I'm not a dating coach. I never ran bootcamps, never sold a "system," never stood on a stage telling guys how to be confident.

Not a guru. Not a pickup artist. Not an influencer. Just a regular guy who got divorced, landed back in the dating world after years away, and had to figure the whole thing out from scratch. StartTheDate is the tool I wish I'd had while I was doing that.

Act 1 · Starting over

Back out there, with no idea how it worked anymore

My marriage ended in 2018. I won't make this a divorce story, because it isn't one. What matters here is what came after: I was suddenly single again after being out of the dating world for years.

And everything had changed. The way people meet now happens almost entirely through apps. Profiles, prompts, matches, opening messages. None of it existed the way it does now the last time I was single. I was starting from zero, and I knew it.

Act 2 · The dating years

Five years of figuring it out the hard way

From roughly 2019 to 2024, I lived on the apps. Hinge, Bumble, Tinder. I sent a lot of first messages. I matched with people I was genuinely excited about, and then watched the conversation die in three replies because I said something flat or tried too hard.

I went on good dates. I went on bad ones. I got rejected, ghosted, and left on read more times than I can count. Some of it stung. A lot of it was just confusing, because nobody ever explains what actually went wrong. You just don't hear back, and you're left guessing.

Slowly it started to make sense. I learned how a conversation is supposed to flow. I learned which messages got a real reply and which ones quietly ended things. I learned how to recover after I said the wrong thing instead of spiraling over it. My confidence came back, but it came back from doing the reps, not from reading a book about it.

I didn't learn this as an expert. I learned it as a guy living it, one awkward message at a time.

Act 3 · What I realized

Most guys aren't the problem. The lack of practice is.

Somewhere in those years it hit me. Most men aren't struggling because something is wrong with them. They're good guys. They'd be great to date. They're struggling because nobody ever taught them the part that actually matters, and there's nowhere safe to practice it:

We're all supposed to just know this. Nobody teaches it. So most guys learn it the way I did, by losing match after match until something finally clicks. That felt like a problem worth solving.

Act 4 · Building it

The coach I wish I'd had at the time

The whole way through those years, I kept wishing I had someone in my corner. Not a script to copy. Someone who could look at a conversation with me and say "here's what she's actually responding to," or "that message is fine, send it," or "that one's going to land weird, here's why."

That person didn't exist for me. So eventually I built it. StartTheDate is that coach. You show it the profile or the conversation, and it helps you understand what's happening and what to say next, in your own voice. It's the thing I needed back when I was the guy staring at a blank message box at midnight, overthinking a single reply.

Act 5 · The mission

Help guys become better at this, for real

The point of StartTheDate isn't tricks or lines or getting one over on anyone. It's the opposite of that. The goal is to help men communicate better, get more dates with people they actually like, build real confidence, and become a better version of themselves while they're at it.

If you get better at being honest, interesting, and clear with someone you're attracted to, that doesn't just help your dating life. It tends to spill into the rest of it too. That's the whole idea.

From the founder

I also wrote a book, Build the Man, Win the Game, about the same things that led here: discipline, communication, ownership, and rebuilding after the hard years.

Build the Man, Win the Game

StartTheDate came out of a few hard years, and I'm writing about that part more fully in a book called Build the Man, Win the Game. It's about rebuilding yourself after things fall apart, and becoming the kind of man who's actually ready for someone good. This page is just the dating-app chapter of it.
