Why I Wrote This Book

I didn't set out to write a book about becoming a man. I set out to live through some hard years and rebuild on the other side of them — a marriage that ended, a stretch in a camper with the work gone and the money gone, a house lost to a fire, and debt paid down one payment at a time.

What got me through it wasn't a system or a slogan. It was a handful of plain things I had to learn the hard way: showing up with discipline on the days I didn't feel like it. Getting honest about my own half of what went wrong instead of blaming everyone else. Learning to actually communicate instead of performing. Being a father my kids could count on. And slowly becoming a stronger man — not louder, not flashier, just steadier and harder to knock down.

This book is what I carried out of that. Ten chapters — discipline, purpose, work and money, mindset, health, relationships, communication, environment, confidence, and the long horizon — written the way I'd say them at a kitchen table to a younger guy who's going through it. No hype. No five-step formula. No promises. Just one man, further down the road than he used to be, telling the truth as plainly as he can.

About the Author

Marc-André Gratton is a father and a builder of businesses in Eastern Ontario. He spent his working life in the security trade before going out on his own, and writes from inside the experience rather than above it — a man further down the road than he used to be, not a man who has arrived.
